Russia working on the development of a new “transitional” supersonic strategic bomber based on the Tu-160

Russia working on the development of a new “transitional” supersonic strategic bomber based on the Tu-160. According to military experts, the new Tu-160M2 will be able to overcome the existing antiaircraft and antimissile defense systems of its potential enemies and give designers more time to develop a similar class of airplane of a new generation.

Due to the extension of deadlines for development of the Prospective aviation complex for long-range aviation (Tupolev PAK-DA) aircraft, the leadership of the Russian Defense Ministry decided to establish a medium-term replacement of the plane, based on the Soviet Tu-160.

A source of “Russia Beyond The Headlines” revealed that in the defense-industrial complex this project can become one of the most expensive programs of the Ministry of Defence in the 20s of this century. The value of the project can be compared with the creation of new nuclear missile submarines under the project “Boreas” – in the range of $ 5-7 billion.

Deputy General Director for Design, R&D, Valery Solozobov told RBTH that Tu-160m2 will be fundamentally new constructors decision, although the new “Swan” will keep the appearance of its predecessor.

New avionics suite is being developed for the Tu-160M2 by the Russia’s Radio-Electronic Technologies Concern (KRET). “Today we can say with confidence that the new aircraft will be constructed using the elements of integrated modular avionics (IMA). In the project to modernize the Tu-160, KRET will be creating new onboard systems, controls, a gimbal-less inertial navigation system, electronic warfare complex, fuel use monitoring systems, as well as weapons control systems,” the company told RIA “Novosti”.
