KLM Royal Dutch biofuel flight

The Dutch airline KLM Royal Dutch start trial series of eighty flights from Oslo to Amsterdam using biofuel. The flights will be done by the airplane Embraer 190, which is partner in the project for integration of biofuels in aviation industry. During the trial flights will be made measurements for calculation biofuels efficiency in comparison with conventional kerosene. The biofuel for this series of flights is made of 100% Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) in full compliance with the standard of the European Union. The trial flights are financed by the European Commission and will give clear picture about efficiency of biofuels in passenger aviation.

“KLM believes that biofuel is important for the aviation industry and environment. For this reason, we are cooperating with various partners in order to stimulate the market”, said the CEO of KLM Royal Dutch, Pieter Elbers.

KLMs aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 20 percent per passenger in 2020 compared with 2011 levels through fleet renewal, using sustainable biofuel and increasing flight efficiency.

“Embraer is directly involved in several initiatives and partnerships for research to develop biofuels for aviation, but the flights of KLM are leading. They are the first initiative of Embraer to develop aviation biofuels for regular flights. We will use flights from Oslo to Amsterdam operated by airliner E190, to collect data to assess the efficiency of engines using biofuels compared with those using kerosene”, commented president of Embraer Europe, Jorge Ramos.
